In Washington, patients are not required to submit an application for medical marijuana, nor are patients issued medial marijuana registration identification cards. State-level penalties for possessing cannabis have been removed for patients suffering from a qualifying, debilitating medical condition who receive written recommendation from a licensed medical health care professional. It is important that the physician’s recommendation is written on tamper-resistant paper, and that is is worded properly. It must state that, in the health care providers professional opinion, “the patient will likely benefit from medical marijuana treatment.”

Qualified patients with a valid physician recommendation will have a defense against criminal prosecution if he or she posses up to twenty four ounces of usable marijuana or fifteen plants.

The following are types of medical health care providers that can write a patient’s medical marijuana recommendation:

  • Medical Doctors
  • Physician Assistants
  • Osteopathic Physicians and Osteopathic Physician Assistants
  • Naturopathic Physicians
  • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners

Listed below are qualifying debilitating medical conditions:

  • Cancer
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hepatitis C
  • Anorexia
  • Cachexia
  • Multiple sclerosis (and other muscle spasm disorders)
  • Epilepsy (and other seizure disorders)
  • Glaucoma
  • Chron’s Disease
  • Intractable Pain
