Red Eyed Brides and The Cannabis Wedding Expo

It would be wedding season any day and not enough people would be getting high at the receptions in Colorado. So, in 2014, Bec Koop decided she wanted to bring the cannabis out into the open and make it part of the celebration. In an interview with The Cannabist, Koop says,

“I sometimes joke: With every single wedding that we’ve been to, there’s probably been at least one person out in the car in the parking lot getting high.”

And she’s isn’t wrong, is she? Some alcohol drinkers will carry a flask in their pocket or purse when attending nuptials – how is bringing a joint with you any different? And why are we still hiding in the parking lot? Marijuana’s reputation with negative Nancies is consistently improving and I’m positive many of the folks in the cannabis community expect that pot will be legal, nationwide, before it is all said and done.

So why not? Why shouldn’t Koop pair two things she truly loves – floral arrangements and cannabis. It takes a lot of guts to start your own business, and it takes even more guts to start a business that basically hucks federal law right out of the window. But that is just what Koop did – and she and her team have been making an impact ever since.

Even so, there was still the question of how. HOW would this work? I remember hearing a friend say Bec and her company Buds and Blossoms (now Irie Weddings and Events), was going to be doing her wedding. She had heard about Bec by word of mouth, but this bride wondered aloud how the heck OTHER brides would hear about this groundbreaking wedding planner. Would enough people hear about what they were doing? Enough, at least, to support a growing business?

Well, Koop and some pals worked their way around that initial issue with a brilliant marketing idea. In Philip Wolf (Founder of Cultivating Spirits) and Nicki Usbay (Founder of LoveAndMarij.com), Koop found just the partners she needed to create a one of a kind event. The trio decided to begin planning the Cannabis Wedding Expo to be held in January of 2016.

You read that correctly – a cannabis wedding expo – the first, actually. And it still runs today.

It is like every other wedding expo in the sense that there are vendors to help plan, feed, entertain and indulge couples and their guests on that special day. But then it gets a little less like other wedding expos. If the venue that hosts the expo approves, organizers have a designated assigned area for on-site cannabis consumption.

Imagine – cannabis bouquet/boutonniere displays. Cannabis budtenders available for hire, with the aim of helping make strain selection less strenuous for future wedding guests. Speakers round out the expo events with advice from cannabis wedding brides-to-be and an educational chat about the effects of using marijuana and alcohol simultaneously.

It sounds like something a cannabis-loving bride and groom to be only day-dream about. To plan on sharing a joint instead of raising a glass at their packed wedding reception. Luckily, with a combined effort from these three – Koop, Wolf and Usbay – marijuana-infused weddings have finally, deservingly, begun to get their day in the sun.
