July’s Females in Cannabis

There are more women CEOs in the cannabis industry than in any other industry. In this emerging sector, both in the United States and in Canada, women are tired of taking “no” for an answer and instead, are taking cannabis by storm. In our monthly Famous Females in Cannabis column, we aim to appreciate as many of these women as we are able to.

Both Vancouver and Victoria needed Jamie Shaw to consult with them on the formation and development of the regulations for legal cannabis industry in both cities. Shaw knows that things can and should improve, but it standing behind the fight for social use is a no brainer.

She told The Georgia Straight,

“I’d like to see Vancouver have a head start on vapour lounges, edibles, and cafes,” she says. “These things have been developed, and the city could learn from these models now while they’re trying to figure out how to do these things in the future.”

The legal cannabis industry needs forward thinkers like Shaw who see the value in learning as we go, as that is often the way regardless.

Additionally, Shaw is a proponent for the use of cannabis to treat opiate addiction,

“We know that cannabis can be used as an opiate replacement, and I would like to see programs working with Insite, going a step further, where we are not just saying, ‘try to get off these harmful drugs’, but using cannabis to help people do that,” she says.

“We’ve got the College saying that if someone has any kind of addictive issues, they shouldn’t be prescribed cannabis—so all of the people that used it to quit smoking, and all of the people that used it to quit drinking, or to get off of opiates, should not have been allowed to have it? It’s a very strange position for them to take,” she says.

If that wasn’t enough, Jamie Shaw was the original Founder of Vancouver’s chapter of Women Grow, an organization which encourages and supports female entrepreneurs in cannabis. She has truly had a hand in most aspects of the cannabis industry in one way or another.

Contribution to Cannabis

Heidi Keyes formed a new type of art class in Denver in 2014 and clearly, with her tongue in her cheek, she called the thing Puff Pass & Paint. The class is just what is sounds like it might be. Guests bring themselves and a little legal cannabis to the art studio and they get a 420 friendly painting class with all art supplies included. Participants might even attend a sponsored class, in which case they might have the chance to experience a few extra cannabis goodies gifted by some of the top local dispensaries and cannabis companies.

Puff Pass & Paint has since expanded to cover subjects such as Pastry, Pottery and Pampering and has classes in Colorado, California, Oregon, D.C., Arizona and Nevada. Keyes joined forces with Colorado Cannabis Tours (now Cannabis Tours), securing a steady stream of cannabis curious guests and opening herself up to additional business opportunities. In 2018, Keyes announced her newest venture, CannaVines, a cannabis infused wine company based in California.
