The Gist: Blackberry Kush is most popular and easily found in California, but is more of a rare find in Colorado cannabis dispensaries. In fact, berry-based strains as a whole seem more scarce in the Centennial State. Perhaps Cali does Kushes best, or maybe California’s climate produces fruitier buds. Whatever the reason, I was stoked to find out that one of my favorite indica genetics had a home in Denver. I’m an indica guy (except on weekends) who suffers from neck pain, so I often seek out heavy, sedative Kush strains like Blackberry. And surprisingly — as this is often not the case — the potency, structure, and integrity of AllGreens’ Blackberry Kush is completely intact.

Aroma: These Blackberry Kush flowers have a mild scent of fresh blackberries. Although not overpowering, the sweet aroma of blackberries is very much there. It’s convenient when a strain smells exactly like its name, and that’s the case here. The anise and berry terpenes (molecules responsible for scent and flavor) are a nice breath of summer air in the dog days of winter.

Taste: When smoked out of a glass pipe, AllGreens’ Blackberry Kush flowers taste hashy. The berry flavor is mildly apparent upon inhalation. However, even out of a fresh green hit, I mostly just tasted resin. Considering Blackberry Kush has direct Afghan heritage (like all Kush strains), this rich taste wasn’t so surprising. The post-exhalation after-taste was slightly chocolatey with an herbal spiciness.

Kudos to AllGreens’ cultivators, as this sample looked and tasted like it could be boutique, home-grown herb.

Aesthetic: It’s rare to find such potent, trichome (kief) covered from a dispensary these days. These light yet bright green Blackberry Kush flowers have a circular/oval structure and solid density. Even after having stored them in a glass jar for over a week, the freshness and flavor were maintained. There’s a faint, light purple color sprinkled throughout the buds, particularly towards the base.

Effect: AllGreens’ Blackberry Kush is not your run-of-the-mill Kush. This heavy-hitting strain provides an instantaneous head rush of cerebral euphoria, which remains strong for the first 10-15 minutes. I smoked half a bowl and didn’t even need the rest, as it left my heart racing slightly. Soon thereafter, the high becomes a more standard, full-body Indica buzz with a very deep, tranquil effect. My eyes wanted to shut, my brain stopped pulsing, and for the next hour my neck felt a little less cranky.

(Note: I smoke a lot of cannabis, and a lot of hash, so if you’re a novice, tread lightly with this strain. She’s potent!)

Recommendation: Blackberry Kush is a great, potent indica strain for those looking to alleviate muscle soreness, stiffness and pain. While it was not the strongest pain relieving strain I’ve ever smoked, it did offer some temporary relief. I would definitely smoke it again.

Bonus: The Blackberry full melt hash from AllGreens is also a very special treat and some of the best cannabis concentrate I’ve found in Colorado.
