Walmart apparently wants everyone of all ages to be “super lucky” for St. Patrick’s Day this year, and by super lucky they mean stoned.
Online Walmart shoppers were shocked to find a hooded sweatshirt available for purchase on the retail-giant’s website which depicted three different types of leaves, one of which belonging to the cannabis plant.
Advertised as a St. Patrick’s Day theme, the hoodie, which was available only in kids sizes, displayed the word “normal” under a three-leaf clover, the word “lucky” below a four-leaf clover, and the words “super lucky” assigned to the cannabis leaf. All three leaves are displayed in line next to one another.
In Walmart’s defense, the product seems to actually have been uploaded by a third party retailer based in Canada, where cannabis is federally legal. Also, like many online clothing retailers, it is likely that the design is photoshopped onto the youth sized sweatshirt to show potential buyers what they would receive. No children were harmed in the making of this product page.
As soon as Walmart representatives were notified about the item, it was removed from the website.
“This isn’t an item sold on Walmart.com and we will alert the IT team to remove the image and/or page immediately,” a Walmart.com supervisor said.
The url still exists on walmart.com, but the page is now empty. Super lucky for us, it was not taken down before some shoppers snagged screenshots of the item.
While Walmart pharmacies may not be distributing medical cannabis just yet, the company did make a deal with the American Cannabis Company out of Denver, CO in March of 2018 to sell a couple of their cultivation products online.
The products selected are designed specifically for cannabis cultivation and can be purchased on Walmart.com. The two ancillary cannabis-industry items sold by Walmart are SoHum Living Soils and Dr. Marijane Root Probiotic.
“ACC is excited to have the opportunity to offer our products online through these major retailers,” said American Cannabis Company CEO Terry Buffalo. “We are especially excited to be selling our proprietary SoHum Living Soils potting mix through these online channels, as we have spent years perfecting our blend, and fine-tuning the messaging around the brand itself.”
American Cannabis Company products are also available through Amazon and Home Depot.
The queen of entertaining and retail, Martha Stewart, has her eye on a new realm to rule: the hemp-derived CBD industry. Partnering with Ontario-based Canopy Growth, Stewart’s name will be behind a new line of hemp CBD products designed for humans and animals.
“I am delighted to establish this partnership with Canopy Growth and share with them the knowledge I have gained after years of experience in the subject of living,” Stewart said in a statement. “I’m especially looking forward to our first collaboration together, which will offer sensible products for people’s beloved pets.”
Canopy Growth, the largest cannabis producer in Canada, is expected to benefit greatly from the lifestyle and merchandising expertise of an advisor like Stewart who has been a well-known and trusted name in households throughout the United States since the 1990s.
Just having Stewart on the team will increase the consumer’s trust and acceptance of Canopy’s CBD products when they become available.
“As soon as you hear the name Martha, you know exactly who we’re talking about,” said Canopy Growth’s chairman and co-CEO Bruce Linton. “Martha is one of a kind and I am so excited to be able to work alongside this icon to sharpen our CBD product offerings across categories from human to animal.”
The homemaking guru’s name is already behind a variety of products including shoes, cookware, wine, premium meats, and books, and she is not shy about her use of cannabis. “Of course I know how to roll a joint,” Stewart proclaimed in 2013, sparking an internet frenzy.
Entering the hemp-derived CBD industry is the natural next step for a successful businesswoman like Stewart. The line of Stewart-advised CBD products for pets is expected to be released first, and then the one for humans will follow.
This is not the first time Canopy Growth has recruited a celebrity collaborator. Snoop Dogg partnered with Tweed, a Canadian subsidiary of Canopy Growth, in February of 2016.
A Canadian member of Parliament openly consumes marijuana, something he says will be completely normal and not at all noteworthy soon in light of the country’s new legalization law that went into effect this week.
“Just as someone might have a glass of wine or a scotch on a Friday night, I would turn to my vaporizer,” MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith said in an interview with CBC news.
But it’s not all about getting high for fun and relaxation for the member of Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s party. He also consumes cannabis medicinally.
“I have Crohn’s, so sometimes I turn to it for that reason as well,” he said.
Within a matter of years, though, no one will care whether lawmakers toke up, Erskine-Smith believes.
“Five years from now, no one will be interested in this question because we’ll all recognize we’re responsible adults, and this is far less harmful than alcohol, far less harmful than tobacco,” he said. “And we should use it responsibly, yes, because there are potential harms.”
“Certainly Canadians are capable of doing this because we’ve been doing it for decades.”
On that point, Erskine-Smith acknowledged that he too has been consuming cannabis before prohibition officially lifted on Wednesday.
“It would be sort of silly for me to stop now, wouldn’t it?” he asked.
Trudeau himself previously admitted that he illegally smoked marijuana while serving in Parliament, but said this week that he has no intention of consuming cannabis now that it is legal.

The Embassy also launched a frequently asked questions page, which responds to queries about how consuming marijuana or investing or working in the cannabis industry could impact admissibility to the U.S.
Perhaps of most interest to Canadians involved in cannabis businesses, the document reiterates and confirms that “a Canadian citizen working in or facilitating the proliferation of the legal marijuana industry in Canada, coming to the United States for reasons unrelated to the marijuana industry will generally be admissible to the United States.”
“However, if a traveler is found to be coming to the United States for reasons related to the marijuana industry, they may be deemed inadmissible,” it says.
While one of the questions—”Do you anticipate more American tourists crossing into Canada due to the change in legalization?—seems to acknowledge that many U.S. citizens support and would like to take advantage of Canada’s new marijuana laws, the Embassy doesn’t really provide a direct response.
The FAQ also covers issues related to visa applications.
“If you plan to use marijuana in the United States then you will be found ineligible for a visa based on intending to engage in unlawful activity in the United States,” it says. “It does not matter if you use doctor-prescribed marijuana. If you smoke cannabis in Canada, you may also be found ineligible…if a physician determines that you have a physical or mental disorder with associated harmful behavior – for example, impaired driving – or are a drug abuser or addict.”
When it comes to working or investing in the marijuana industry, the Embassy says it will only affect visas if the person is “found to be coming to the U.S. for reasons related to the cannabis industry.”
The page also says that while “legalization of cannabis in Canada will not have any impact on cannabis’s legality in the United States,” American officials “have discussed legalization of cannabis at various levels” with their Canadian counterparts.
Despite the relatively polite and level-headed response to the new legalization law of its neighbor to the north, the American government isn’t exactly excited about it.
A top U.S. Customs and Border Protection official, for example, said that Canada’s move to grant pardons for past marijuana offenses wouldn’t necessarily shield those individuals from being denied entry into the U.S.
It remains to be seen how President Trump himself, key White House staffers or Department of Justice officials will respond to Canada’s legalization of marijuana if asked about it publicly.

“Canada has recognized what Oregonians already understand: cannabis prohibition is a failed policy that wastes resources and destroys lives.
“Here in the United States, more and more states are following the lead of Oregonians and legalizing cannabis. Americans across the country, and across party lines, support ending this misguided federal prohibition. Their support has never been stronger and is still growing. Despite this progress, the federal government has yet to provide the reforms we so desperately need. It’s time that changed. Congress should seize the moment, do the right thing, and end the federal prohibition on marijuana once and for all by responsibly regulating and taxing cannabis like any other legal substance.
“Now that our neighbor to the north is opening its legal cannabis market, the longer we delay, the longer we miss out on potentially significant economic opportunities for Oregon and other states across the country.”
