I’m starting to see more high-cannabidiol (CBD) products in the vape cartridge market, which is great: vaping from a disposable cartridge is a discreet, simple method of consuming cannabis medication and the effects are almost instantaneous. AbsoluteXtracts produces a variety of potent cartridges from well-known strains, and Blue Jay Way rounds out the collection as a higher CBD content option.
Blue Jay Way is a strain known for being CBD-rich, meaning it contains more of the non-psychoactive cannabinoid CBD than it does psychoactive THC. Depending on the ratio, higher CBD content can buffer, decrease or even obliterate the psychoactive effects produced by THC, leaving high-CBD strain users without the cerebral euphoria most commonly described as the “high.”
With a CBD to THC ratio of approximately 2:1, the AbsoluteXtracts Blue Jay Way vape cartridge is great for pain relief, inflammation and gastrointestinal issues or conditions like Crohn’s. It has almost no psychoactive effects, which is a good fit for patients seeking daytime or on-the-job relief. This Blue Jay Way cannabis oil concentrate produces a pleasant, berry mixed with wood smoke aroma, and makes for a very smooth vape; no coughing with this cartridge!
After taking a hiatus from the dance studio, I saved Blue Jay Way for the day following my first workout after weeks of vacationing (and holidaying, and eating…). Sure enough, everything hurt: cramps, sciatic pain and muscle soreness. There was no chance I was going to sleep with that much pain, so Blue Jay Way seemed like the perfect opportunity to test its pain relief and sleep-inducing qualities. The pain went away within minutes, and the sleeping effect can best be described as the munchies, but for sleep: getting comfortable and going to sleep seems like the best idea you’ve ever had. It was interesting to experience that but without any sort of high.
There are two things to keep in mind when using this product, and one is the dosage. Since it has negligible psychoactive effects, I could have easily puffed on this for hours, although I probably would have fallen asleep before I was able to consume too much. In small amounts, this could be taken during the day. In large amounts, it has a tranquilizing effect. Try a couple of puffs and then wait a few minutes. I noticed relief after two or three hits, and then had more as needed.
The other reason to not overuse is the price. Blue Jay Way is $60 to $70 for a half gram, making it twice as much as their other cartridges. This is completely reasonable for a high-CBD product, but is a significant investment nonetheless. For me, having a reliable CBD-rich cartridge is priceless when I need immediate relief.
AbsoluteXtracts has plans to release an AC/DC cartridge, so keep an eye out for that product if you’re a fan of the strain.
As far as cannabis is concerned, I am a snobby, outspoken, flower enthusiast. If you grant me the option of cannabis flower or one of its many derivatives, I’ll yell “take me to the source!” My old-school sentiments do not, however, preclude me from occasionally trying one of the many cannabis derivatives that grace today’s modern cannabis society, which brings me to the O.penVAPE RESERVE Cartridge.
At first glance, the O.penVAPE RESERVE looks like any other O.penVAPE vaporizer. The new device is the same sleek, discreet, black vape pen that O.penVAPE helped to develop as the standard for basic cannabis vaporizers.
So what makes the O.penVAPE RESERVE Cartridge stand out from the crowd? Until very recently, most of O.penVAPE’s vaporizer pens used cannabis concentrate cartridges that included polyethylene glycol, a common vape product additive which helps to maintain a physical state conducive to vaporizing. In recent years, however, there has been controversy regarding the safety of additive inhalation; and so began the race to find an alternative. The O.penVAPE RESERVE line did away with polyethylene glycol entirely to create a pure cannabis oil cartridge for the choosy cannoisseur.
Unlike many vaporizers currently on the market, the O.penVAPE RESERVE uses cannabis concentrate cartridges that purely consist of cannabis oil. As I mentioned above, the vaporizer maintains the same look, feel, and usability that consumers have come to expect from O.penVAPE products. The pen is still easy to assemble with only two components – the cartridge and battery – which screw into each other. A third, USB component can be screwed into the battery when the device must be recharged.
Once charged, the O.penVAPE RESERVE is incredibly easy to use as there are no buttons to push, and a light at the bottom of the pen signals when the pen is in use, overheats, or needs to be recharged. The O.penVAPE RESERVE has maintained its discreet form (my favorite feature), which allows both patients and recreational users to consume at times and places they may not otherwise be able.
The most noticeable difference in appearance is how much thicker and darker the concentrate in the RESERVE cartridge is without any additives. For me, this is reassuring in that it is looks as I’ve come to expect cannabis concentrates to appear.
Drawing on the O.penVAPE RESERVE requires just a little more strength than the original, given the thicker concentrate, but the RESERVE product rewards you for your extra effort by smoking more like a load-your-own vaporizer or even an actual dab. The pure concentrate has a clean oil flavor that lets the terpenes shine through. The O.penVAPE RESERVE also offers a more robust smoke that the consumer will definitely feel accompanied by an oddly satisfying increase in the amount of smoke exhaled. If you are a seasoned smoker, you probably prefer to feel each drag and subsequent exhale without feeling like you’re inhaling unnecessary chemicals. On these marks, O.penVAPE RESERVE delivers.
For this review, I sampled the Aspen OG 420 mg (420, nice) RESERVE cartridge, which is a sativa concentrate on the sweeter, robust side; O.penVAPE RESERVE also offers other sativa, hybrid, and indica concentrate cartridges that are strain specific, so there is something for all different types of consumers. In this case, the Aspen OG gave me a moderately uplifting high that effectively amounted to an afternoon pick-me-up and was accompanied by physical sensations in my head and chest. I never felt like I was zoned out or ultra focused, but I was definitely high and energized from just a couple tokes.
Overall, I would say the Aspen OG cartridge stoned me without rendering me dysfunctional, which is perhaps the perfect combination for a product that is often used in situations where discretion is necessary. More importantly, I felt good about using the O.penVAPE RESERVE because I knew I was consuming pure cannabis oil. I would highly recommend the O.penVAPE RESERVE products to individuals who currently vaporize but are looking for something cleaner and with a more pronounced smoking experience. I would also encourage those who need to be discreet in their cannabis consumption to check out the O.penVAPE RESERVE as, in my opinion, it is the perfect compliment to the clandestine cannoisseur’s paraphernalia collection.
When purchasing any cannabis product, I like to remind myself that there’s power in choosing which products to buy and, by proxy, which ideals you’d like to support. Occasionally, you’ll find a company whose passion for their product extends to all aspects of their business, and Jetty Extracts is a perfect example of such a company. Even if I ended up disliking their product, I would feel good about giving them my money (more on that later).
But I am indeed a fan now that I know Jetty delivered on every one of their claims. My half-gram cartridge of cannabis concentrate came in packaging made from recycled materials and was clearly labeled with the strain name — Silver Haze. The cartridge was filled with a cool-toned brown concentrate that was liquid in texture but not runny. At $40 for a half gram of cannabis oil, this cartridge is on par with other premium cartridges.
Out of all the many cannabis strains on the market, Silver Haze is one of my personal favorites. To me, it has a complex, pungent campfire aroma of wood and sweet smoke. Silver Haze was bred from the original landrace Haze strain, and is categorized as a sativa. Being crossed with Northern Lights, a popular indica strain, makes Silver Haze a go-to for those seeking relief from pain and depression. If you’ve found sativas to be too overwhelming or racy in the past, but still want a strain that offers the uplifting, energizing effects typical of a sativa, Silver Haze may be a good choice. For those seeking immediate relief, this is a fast-acting strain.
I tested this cartridge while getting ready for the holidays, so I had a multitude of items on my to-do list that required both physical and mental tasks, which didn’t leave a lot of time for medicating. Silver Haze works quickly, and Jetty made a cartridge with little to no drag, allowing me to medicate and get on with it. The first draw right out of the package can be a bit harsh, but this was perfectly smooth. After the first puff, I realized that this was a cartridge I’d like to spend time tasting and experiencing. Within a few minutes I started to feel the cerebral relaxation, and suddenly my to-do list didn’t seem so long. I did all of my online Christmas shopping and decorated my house without the anxiety I often feel during the holidays.
Now it was time to kick back and relax, and this Jetty Extracts cartridge was a great product for that. Short pulls, long pulls and frequent hits all tasted just as great as the first, with no burnt flavors or harsh hits. Since I was able to medicate more, I experienced a stronger body high, complete with floaty, weightless tingling in my arms and legs. The psychoactive effects were comfortable, allowing creative thoughts and a decent attention span while still being grounded in reality.
Buying cannabis oil cartridges in LA is still a journey. Most dispensaries only carry a few different brands of cartridges (if any), and only a couple of strains of each. This cartridge is definitely worth the search. In addition to buying a great product, I’m supporting a company that gives back to the community and continues to focus on research and development. Jetty donates one percent of their gross sales to cancer patients, including consultations for treatment plans and guidance in cultivating at home. Jetty also provides easy access to the independent test results of their products, which is a level of transparency that sets them apart from the competition.
Even without all of the good-will qualities, Jetty makes a top-notch product at a reasonable price, and I will be purchasing again.
Holding a solid position within the premium cannabis vape cartridge market, Eureka Vapor has earned respect for the quality, great tasting cannabis concentrate cartridges that they produce. Eureka Vapor originally caught my attention because they meet my three main criteria for a quality cartridge:
- CO2 extraction
- No propylene glycol (used to thin out a concentrate and has an inconclusive safety rating)
- Strain-specific cartridges
For the purposes of this review, I selected the 0.5 gram Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) strain cartridge by Eureka Vapor.
Girl Scout Cookies was crossed from the infamous pure-sativa landrace strain, Durban Poison, and the genetically mysterious OG Kush. While the arguably unknown genetics of OG Kush often leave it categorized as a hybrid strain, the description of it’s effects often include indica-like body sensations. The effects of Durban Poison usually translate more cerebrally, with uplifting and energizing mental stimulation.
While Girl Scout Cookies has become well known as the go-to strain for popular rap icons like 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa, it’s potency may not be best suited for novice consumers. The power of the Cookies is however well-suited for patients and recreational consumers who seek long-lasting relief from pain, nausea, stress and anxiety, but still need to go about their day with normal functionality. Because Girl Scout Cookies often tests high in THC, it is also a great strain to combat appetite loss. Additionally, GSC’s high THC content may benefit patients with acute symptoms or users with high tolerances.
Although the Eureka Vapor cartridge packaging reminds me of something I saw once in the 80’s, the package construction itself is solid. So solid, in fact, that I felt comfortable tossing it in the back seat on my way home from Korea Town Collective. The concentrate in Eureka Vapor’s GSC cartridge is as thick as molasses and a beautiful, dark yet transparent amber color. These cartridges come in .5 gram, 1 gram and 1.5 gram cartridges. I prefer the half gram options. This Eureka Vapor cartridge is compatible with any 510-threaded vape pen that you may have laying around, whereas the larger cartridges seem to need a little more power to get a decent rip. Due to the thickness of this concentrate, consider your hardware when buying the larger size.
GSC is usually classified as a hybrid, but Eureka has labeled it as an indica. A Eureka Vapor representative shared the reasoning behind listing their Girl Scout Cookies vape cartridge as an indica:
“Our Girl Scout cookie strain is on the heavier indica side due to our original OG Kush being so dominant with Grand Daddy Purple, we felt it lead us to gravitate more to the indica strain. “
After connecting the GSC cartridge to my Bhang pen, I went out on the porch to enjoy a few evening tokes. I’m not sure if it was the smoke in the air from the various wildfires in SoCal or if people were using their fireplaces on that chilly night, but the taste and smell of the vapor brought me back to campfires and s’mores. It has the sweetness that many users may associate with Girl Scout Cookies, but perhaps even more so. It has an earthy, woody flavor that makes you forget that you’re vaping a cartridge, which is a testament to both the strain and the manufacturing of this cartridge. In other words, it does the strain justice. The vapor did not taste burnt nor synthetic and I experienced absolutely no irritation.
Even though I started to feel the initial effects within minutes after taking my first hit off the vape, the full effects built up gradually. The tension headache that had been irritating me for hours subsided and I was able to enjoy my Saturday night while being coherent enough to experience it. At it’s peak, the cerebral stimulation of this GSC faded into mental relaxation and left me feeling lighter with floaty, tingling body sensations. I see why Eureka Vapor labels their GSC as an indica.
One detail that might make consumption difficult for some users is the amount of effort needed to take a hit. You really need to suck! After some initial large hits, I continued taking smaller puffs for about an hour, hoping that the prolonged heat would help with the drag. Eventually, my face started feeling tired and it had nothing to do with the effects of the Girl Scout Cookies. I tried switching it to a larger, variable voltage pen and still experienced a lot of resistance. More experienced vape users may not have this minor problem.
The flip side is this cartridge lasts a long time. Between a few friends, we were able to pass the Eureka Vapor CSC cartridge around a rotation while watching TV and chatting. At the end of the night, it appeared as though it was a brand new cartridge. We definitely put it through its paces and were sufficiently medicated, yet it looked almost full. For that reason, this is one of the best vape cartridges I’ve experienced in terms of value.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this cartridge, especially for those who are looking for great value without sacrificing quality or purity. The folks at Eureka have clearly paid attention to the strength and quality of their product and I’ll definitely be repurchasing.
