Marijuana Arrests Rising in NYC Under De Blasio

Arrests for marijuana possession by the NYPD under the guild of Mayor Bill de Blasio are not so great. At the current pace the numbers will at minimum equal, probably exceed, the total number made under previous Mayor Michael Bloomberg. A recent report published by the Drug Policy Alliance revealed that the NYPD made more total marijuana possession arrest in March-August of 2014 than in the same period of time in 2013 under BloomBerg. This all comes after de Blasio’s campaign promises to bring down unnecessary marijuana arrest numbers in the city.

A press release that was provided along side the report revealed further staggering statistics from the New Your State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Most notably “that overall, low income and middle class communities of color face dramatically higher rates of marijuana possession arrests than do white communities of every class bracket.” The report elaborates, “The NYPD continues to arrest blacks at seven times the rates of whites, and Latinos nearly four times the rates of whites. But young whites use marijuana at higher rates than young blacks and Latinos.”

As the world’s most recognized law enforcement agency, the NYPD isn’t doing themselves any favors in the PR department lately. From the recent choke hold incident being ruled a homicide to pistol whipping teens, the black eyes continue.
