A police officer in Ankeny, Iowa embarrassed himself and his department with the level of unprofessionalism he displayed during a recent traffic stop involving a group of young disc golfers. The officer pulled the car over for not having lights turned on, and seems unaware that he is being video taped when he makes a statement that can simultaneously be described as foolish and hilarious.
The interrogation proceeded as follows:
The cop asks the motorist,
“You play frisbee golf?”
To which the driver of the car replies,
“I do, a lot actually. I play out at Heritage. Its my favorite course.”
At this point, the conversation seems light and friendly, but what stutters out of the officer’s mouth next is priceless,
“You do? OK. I need you to answer me a question. Why is it that everybody that plays Frisbee golf smokes weed?”
Remarkably, the driver does not laugh at this. Not one of the passengers of the car laugh either. They handle the situation with impressive coolness. The driver begins to speak, denying that every person who plays disc golf also smokes weed, but the officer, using his best “I’m a cool cop” voice, interrupts him to say,
“It’s everybody, man. You can’t tell me you never smoked weed,”
Finally, the passengers break into giggles as the driver, exercising his rights, says,
“I’m not gonna tell you one way or another.”
The officer then continues with the cool cop trickery, attempting to get the driver to admit to smoking weed, and to having some in the car. Unfortunately for the officer, the motorist does not fall for his antics, and is permitted to go on his way.
The driver may have handled this ludicrous accusation calmly, but there very well may be some ticked off frolfers tonight, in the land of disc golf.
