Leafs By Snoop Peanut Butter Gems Review

Leafs By Snoop Peanut Butter Gems Review

If you have read my Mighty Mint Edible Review, you know I’m a flower snob; but I’m also human, which means I’ll never turn down a free buzz. So naturally, when the powers that be asked if I would review Leafs by Snoop’s line of edibles—predictably named Dogg Treats—I sat, shook their hand, rolled over, played dead, and did everything else they asked of me until they confirmed that “I’m a good boy” and gave me my Treats. Reflecting on the experience, maybe I’m not as human as I originally thought.

After I received the Peanut Butter Gem Dogg Treats, I collected what was left of my tattered dignity and inspected the cuboid-shaped packaging. The first quality that stood out to me is the product’s modern box art, which appears to be a plain, white affair with bold, basic lettering, a stylish Leafs by Snoop logo, and the expected novella of ingredients. I next noticed that two of the packages thinner sides have blue and brown patterning. Simple box art right? Au contraire mon frère. Upon closer inspection, one finds an exquisite paisley-cannabis leaf motif subtly imprinted on the package’s white canvas with transparent gloss. And remember the blue and brown coloring? That is actually a woman’s bikini-clad derriere swimming through a pool because I don’t know why. I was actually kind of confused by this image; then again, I didn’t dislike it either, and I’m no art critic.

After thoroughly scrutinizing the packaging, I attempted to open the package by sliding out a plastic container within the box; the plastic container within, however, would not budge and seemed to be caught on something. I cursed under my breath and eventually pulled the interior container out using all my strength, only to realize I had just bypassed the package’s childproofing with brute strength—no easy task, let me tell you. I really must commend Leafs by Snoop on their child-proofing: subtle enough for a half-sober adult to miss, sturdy enough to fluster the same half-sober adult, and damn near impossible for a child to open—the consumer must press two tabs about three inches apart with one hand while pulling the interior container out with the other hand.

After thoroughly scrutinizing the packaging and then destroying it, I finally got my first glimpse of the edibles within. Five pieces of solid milk chocolate, each molded like a vertically bisected, round cut diamond and each perhaps smaller than half of a golf ball; an overall simple yet appetizing chocolate candy appearance. None of these pieces really smelled of cannabis or hash; instead, the Peanut Butter Gems smelled as expected: chocolaty with just a hint of peanut butter.

Each of the five pieces is listed at 8mg of THC and my maximum tolerance is about 50mg of edible THC, so I opted to try three in one sitting for a grand total of 24mg. When I bit into the first piece, I was greeted with the standard chocolate candy bar texture that Americans have come to expect. The chocolate’s semi-soft texture, however, is accented by the crunchiness of tiny peanut butter flakes imbedded throughout the chocolate; the two textures masterfully play off of each other to create a satisfying mastication experience.

Whereas the Peanut Butter Gem’s texture was immediately satisfying, the flavor took a different, yet ultimately enjoyable, path. The Peanut Butter Gem’s flavor immediately slaps the consumer’s face with a hand full of hash, but then quickly apologizes by enveloping the consumer’s mouth with a rich, almost dark, chocolate flavor accompanied with a hint of peanut butter. As the experience continues, the taste of rich chocolate gives way to bold peanut butter until the balance of flavor has totally shifted in favor of the latter. Aside from the initial shock of hash, which exists for only a brief moment, I am pleased to find that the flavor is exactly what you would expect of a decent chocolate and peanut butter treat.

On this fateful night, I ate three Peanut Butter Gems at 8:23 p.m. and then began binge watching Black Sails. Halfway through episode two, 9:20 p.m., the Peanut Butter Gems began to take effect. I felt the beginnings of a body high as my chest grew heavy and my limbs fell limp. By 10:00 p.m., I was in full mellow mode; I felt both physically and mentally relaxed as a sedentary, chill vibe had gotten the best of me. At the peak of my edible high, I did not feel as though the Peanut Butter Gems forced me into a couchlocked state—I could have moved if I wanted—but the suggestion was strong. I suspect that, had I eaten all five Gems, I would have woken up the next morning in the couch divot my body had formed.

If you like chocolate and peanut butter flavored edibles, Leafs by Snoop’s Peanut Butter Gems is one of the best options I have tried thus far. Aside from the initial hash kick, the flavor is on point, and the effect is substantial. Try a piece or three and go explore your world with a mellow perspective; or eat all five and bury your backside in a comfortable couch. Either way, you are in for a good time.

Leafs By Snoop Cherry Fruit Chews Review

Leafs By Snoop Cherry Fruit Chews Review

The last three months of the year are hectic in the cannabis industry with business conferences, cannabis competitions, and award ceremonies. November 2015’s calendar included a business conference and trade show in Las Vegas, a High Times Cannabis Cup in Jamaica and the launch of three celebrity cannabis brands — all in the same week.

Willie Nelson launched his brand, Willie’s Reserve, the same night that Julian Marley launched JuJu Royal vape pens. They hosted launch parties at different suites and clubs high up in the Rio Hotel and Casino in Vegas. Earlier in the week, however, Snoop Dogg launched his line of flower and edibles, called Leafs by Snoop. The launch party was a less-than-publicized private party hosted by Snoop and his Colorado licensed business partner, Livwell. Leafs By Snoop flower products initially received mixed reviews (click here to read a review of Leafs By Snoop Cali Kush).

The Dogg Treats edibles, on the other hand, I heard were quite good. So, I decided to sample the Cherry Fruit Chews one Saturday afternoon while I went to Bernie Sanders’ rally at the Denver Convention Center.

Dose

Each package of Cherry Fruit Chews Dogg Treats contains 10 chews, and each one contains 10 mg of active THC. I took one 10 mg chew while waiting in line, just as the doors were opened. When we got upstairs to wait in line for the metal detectors, I found the media check-in table. After I told them I freelance for a cannabis industry news site, they gave me my press pass and informed me that I could not bring any product into the event. So, I found a trash can and ate the second 10 mg chew that I brought with me, disposed of the box and went into the event.

Aesthetic

The packaging was cardboard with a very clean, sleek design. Pinching on the sides allowed me to slide out a plastic tray that contained the cannabis infused candy. It was definitely childproof and took me a good minute to figure out how to open it. Each piece was a creamy red and pink striped chew about the size of a Tootsie Roll.

Taste & Texture

The flavor was very clearly cherry. It played to my bias as artificial cherry is my favorite flavor of candy. It had a very slight cannabis flavor which was almost completely covered by the artificial cherry. It was chewy. Initially, it was tough — almost like a Laffy Taffy. As I continued to eat it, it softened up to the texture of a Starburst, but with more “bounce”, though not as much as a Hi-Chew.

Effect

Within 15-20 minutes, I felt a solid body high accompanied by a slight floating feeling in my head. Another 30 minutes in, my eyes felt extremely relaxed, but not droopy the way some edibles affect me. The high lasted a good five to six hours. I finally felt it start to wear off after the rally ended and I made the 30 minute walk back to the Highlands.

Summary

Overall, the Leafs by Snoop Cherry Fruit Chews provided an enjoyable high. The effects of two 10 mg chews was consistent with my experience eating 20 mg of other brands of edibles. It may have been a result of the THC, but I could really feel the energy of the crowd resonating with each emphatic point that Sen. Sanders made. It made me realize that I have not been this excited about an election season in many years.
