Are Drones the Future of Medical Marijuana Delivery?

One California medical marijuana delivery company is pushing the boundaries of traditional commerce. The company, Trees, currently accepts bitcoin digital currency as payment for its products, and now it hopes to use drones to deliver customers’ purchases.

Trees packages its goods in bento-style boxes that contain an assortment of buds or extracts in addition to accessories such as vape pens and lighters. A company promotional video shows a customer sitting on a field of green grass as a drone enters the scene to Wagner’s “Flight of the Valkyries.” The drone drops the box and the customer begins digging through his box of goodies.

It is unclear whether Trees has received a Section 333 waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration to allow it to operate drones for commercial purposes. While Trees provides a disclaimer that drone delivery is not available in all areas, the company does service more basic deliveries of either “The Bud Box” or “The Concentrate Box” in San Francisco.
