Two men in the United Kingdom have created a never before seen consumer product made from the cannabis plant. Hemp has long been used for consumer and commercial textiles, building materials, medicine, nutrition and more. Now, mass production preparations are in process for the first ever hemp eye-wear. Stylish frames surround brown polarized lenses in these durable and environmentally friendly sunglasses.
Hemp eye-wear sunglasses are made from a hemp composite material consisting of hemp & flax fibers. The frames are formed from the material through a compression molding process and the result is a strong, lightweight, sustainable pair of sunglasses.
Sam Whitten, the creator and product designer of Hemp Eye-wear teamed up with brand designer, Brad Smith to make his dream come true. Whitten is from a small town called Peebles 20 miles south of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. He went to school for product design, and has always had an interest in environmentally friendly products, and sustainable production processes. He spent his final year in school trying to bring it all together, and was able to began prototype development using campus resources.
School ended and Whitten no longer had access to the production tools available at school, so he started a make-shift production warehouse in his garage. He and his friends have been testing the prototypes throughout the summer of 2014.
With motivation from the hugely positive response at the 2014 New Designers exhibition in London as well as from prototype testing and internet uproar, the pair created an account on Kickstarter to raise funding and awareness for this project. Kickstarter is an online fundraising platform for creative and artistic projects that can be used by anyone. The two set a Kickstarter goal of £25,000, and they have already surpassed that goal with a current total of £27,691 raised. This is great news for the pair considering that in order to receive any of the funds raised, the goal must be met by the set deadline.
They have selected a production factory in London with 30 years experience in sustainable material production, and with the funding raised, the sunglasses are estimated to be available for consumer purchase by June 2015. Hopefully the pair will roll out more stylish, consumer products made from cannabis plant fibers shortly there after.
