While the most popular strains seem to be forever-stocked on nearly all cannabis dispensary shelves, it is always nice to discover lesser-known or proprietary genetics that deserve more attention. I recently had the pleasure of discovering one such example in the Sour Apple Maui strain grown and sold by Oasis Cannabis Superstore in Denver, Colorado.
I entered Oasis Cannabis Superstore on 44th Ave without a specific strain in mind, which could easily become an overwhelming situation considering that they keep more than 100 strains on hand at all times. I was lucky enough to be helped by Lanai, a friendly and knowledgeable veteran member of the Oasis team, who was able to quickly point me in the direction of Sour Apple Maui. (Big thanks, Lanai. Aesthetic
This sample of Sour Apple Maui is reminiscent of flora found on a tropical island. These dense flowers fade from dark green at the core to lighter, lime-green on the edges. Each bud was speckled with bright orange hairs (pistils) and shimmering concentrations of kief (trichomes). Once ripped in half and upon closer inspection, I noticed a few tiny leaves that were slightly purple in color.
Aroma
These flowers smelled sweet and earthy with strong undertones of fuel and citrus. It likely contains higher quantities of limonene, a terpene found in cannabis, citrus fruits, juniper and several other plants, known to help to increase mental focus and relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Effects
Full disclosure, I was slightly nervous about trying Sour Apple Maui for a couple of reasons. First of all, it tested highest for THC out of all strains available at Oasis, maxing out at 27 percent, and strains super high in THC often leave me with a racing heart. I usually prefer heavy indicas, but Sour Apple Maui is an 80 percent sativa dominant strain. I may have been skeptical, but I will forever trust Lanai’s recommendations because she was spot-on with this one. It provided me with just the right amount of cerebral relaxation to remain calm and clear-headed, in-the-moment, and therefore able to concentrate on one task at a time.
Just as the label very clearly stated, this strain is perfect for those, like myself, who suffer from ADD. I also found it to be a phenomenal pain reliever. It eradicated the headache I woke up with almost instantly. The Oasis team also, understandably, recommends this strain in the treatment of depression, fatigue and muscle spasms.
Summary
Officially on my list of favorites, Sour Apple Maui has become my go-to strain for summer. If it were a song, it’d be “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin because whether you’re relaxing by the pool, hiking a new trail or playing frisbee at the park, Sour Apple Maui will leave you carefree and in-the-moment. It may also be a good option for those seeking daytime pain relief at work, or for anyone suffering from PTSD.

Lanai was working at the Oasis Cannabis Superstore on 44th Ave when I visited. After asking questions to find out what effects I typically like, she suggested two strains — Cherry Lime Rickey and Sour Apple Maui.

Aesthetic
Cherry Lime Rickey is a sturdy strain with heavy, solid buds. This sample is devoid of any extraneous leaves that have a nasty habit of filling up orders with fluff rather than substance. Due to the robust development of trichomes these gems look like they have been dusted with confectioner’s sugar, something you will surely notice when handling. Overall CLR is a cosmetically attractive strain with impressive amounts of red hairs coupled with a healthy glisten from its globule growth (kief).
Aroma
The olfactory makeup of Cherry Lime Rickey is unmistakably pastoral. The first impression is one of fresh growth on the farm, evoking images of green life under the sun. When you break CLR open there is an added dimension of skunk and ammonia that speaks to its potent effects. Although CLR does not share many scented similarities with its namesake, you will nonetheless find an undercurrent of citrus (limonene) that makes its presence known, if only intermittently.
Consumption
I smoked this sample of Cherry Lime Rickey in a small glass chillum pipe. It burned evenly throughout, providing a well-rounded and easy-to-pull hit. Although not always the case, with CLR the flavor profile matches its odor to a surprising degree. I would offer that the skunky and ammonia flavor comes through a bit stronger during the initial inhale, and then remains in the aftertaste. The combination of everything is a pleasant rich draw, and it burned down to white ash which is a good tell for proper flushing and curing.
Effects
Take note of its strong head change in the first five minutes, Cherry Lime Rickey packs a mean punch up front. Despite that shock bit at the beginning however, CLR transitions into a surprisingly clear-headed state where 15 minutes after consumption I was able to enjoy a genuine state of relaxation coupled with reasonable lucidity. The largest noticeable effect was of that to the body. A release of tension is palpable, with an emphasis on easing muscle tightness. For a solid hour after smoking there was a continued loose feeling that I found quite comfortable. The effects taper off largely around the hour to hour and a half mark.
The claims by Oasis Cannabis Superstore that Cherry Lime Rickey is an ideal strain to relieve symptoms of muscle spasms, anxiety, PMS and pain seem correct. It would also likely be a strain beneficial in the treatment of PTSD.

For those keeping score at home, I last reviewed Durban Poison from Oasis Cannabis Superstore on W. 44th Ave. in Denver. If you have not read my Durban Poison review, that’s cool I guess. In the review, I mentioned the vast selection of cannabis to be had at Oasis; so it should come as no surprise that when I bought Durban Poison, I also bought a couple other strains from the BevMo!™ of bud. This week, I present to you Afghani grown by Kind Love.
Eponymously named for its originating region, Afghani is widely considered the mother of all landrace strains because cannabis scholars believe Afghani to be the first strain that humans used. Conventional knowledge states that Afghani has always been an indica landrace, but there are those who believe that a sativa Afghani once grew in the region as well. Afghani is a highly resinous strain of cannabis that was historically, and still is, cultivated in the Middle East to produce hashish. Eventually, Afghani found its way to California in the 1970s where it sparked the United States indica invasion. Today, almost all indica and many hybrid strain varieties have Afghani somewhere in their ancestral lineage, such as AK47, Cheese strains, and Skunk strains.
Kind Love’s Afghani appears to be monochrome, pastel green; upon closer inspection, however, I noticed the occasional spot of light green on the flower as well as dark green attributable to minute leaf remnants from the hand trimming process. The flower also has a steady distribution of moderately sized orange pistils and a solid, dense layer of trichomes. I was pleased to see heavy trichome coverage because resinous flower is a defining characteristic of Afghani, which is why the strain has a history of cultivation for hashish production.
Afghani’s terpene profile is unique, as it initially smells earthy with floral notes, and then exhibits a spicy aroma that fades into a sort of haze-pine scent. Upon smoking the Afghani, I was greeted with a kick to the throat. The flavor and smoke is acrid, harsh, and earthy; not so much that it is unbearable, but noticeably more than the average strain. Normally, such a profile would turn me off to a strain, but these qualities are typical of Afghani’s resinous flower and, thus, happily welcomed. No pain, no gain; am I right?
Immediately after smoking Afghani, I felt wave after wave of a most glorious body high wash over me, particularly in my limbs. What made this body high so glorious? While the Afghani tickled my limbs, it also gently caressed my head, convinced my body to relax, and alleviated my back pain. I felt like the Hindu deity Ganesha was behind me using all six of his arms to make my day; do not ask what his trunk was doing. After about 30 minutes, Afghani tempted me to nap, but the temptation was not so strong that I could not resist. Spoiler alert: I did not resist.
If you enjoy indica strains, body highs, seek pain relief, or are simply looking for a strain to help you sleep at night, Afghani is an excellent choice; and very few cultivators grow it as well as Kind Love. Regardless of your preference, I would recommend all cannabis enthusiasts try Afghani at least once because of its massive influence on today’s cannabis gene pool. Do not let Afghani’s relatively harsh smoke deter you; you will be missing out.
