Any cannabis strain with the word “Skunk” in her name has the legacy of one of the more unusual, fragrant, and potent old-school strains to live up to. The Skunk gene, believed to have also contributed to the ever-popular Sour Diesel strain, has withstood time for a reason and this ancestor of Skunk #1 has come to rest in Denver, Colorado in the form of Island Sweet Skunk.
Strain: Island Sweet Skunk (aliases: ISS and Sweet Island Skunk)
Genetics: Skunk x Unknown
Dispensary: Denver Relief, 1 Broadway A150, Denver, CO 80203
This sample of Island Sweet Skunk from Denver Relief looks like freshly watered grass. It was obviously flushed and cured properly. These Island Sweet Skunk flowers boast a unique bright green sheen that almost overshadows the shimmering trichomes (kief). Dark bronze and bright orange hairs (also trichomes) make a dramatic imprint on the bud’s physique by consistently jetting out and curling around the flower structure. The contrast between the green and orange make this sample particularly fun to inspect. As expected from a Skunk descendant, these nugs are quite dense, meaning what may look like a small quantity turns into more than expected once broken up.
The scent or aroma of cannabis (and most other plants) is attributed to molecules called terpenes. At first, my olfactory system was met with an abrasive, skunk-like aroma from these Island Sweet Skunk flowers. The more subtle fruit undertones combine with a musty, herbal aroma on the finish to form a smell that takes you to the beach — an island mixture of pineapple juice and mango. This strain definitely contains myrcene, the terpene known to reduce pain and inflammation while producing uplifting or energizing effects. When the nugs are cracked open, the funk–think goat cheese– smell resurfaces.
The first green hit from a glass spoon pipe tastes like a mixture of fresh fruit, nutmeg and that same goat cheese funk. The fruity terpenes really shine through once combusted. These perfectly dried ISS flowers quickly burn off, leaving behind white ash — again signifying that they’ve been flushed and cured properly.
Island Sweet Skunk is very sativa dominant. Some Skunk varieties are known to test higher in CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that can help to buffer the psychoactive effects of THC, allowing for a more functional high. This sample of Island Sweet Skunk definitely falls into that category. This strain won’t overpower a person after one hit. A very smooth, balanced high, this strain may enhance your music listening experience, motivation and ability to focus.
As a properly grown version of Island Sweet Skunk, this strain is appropriate for those seeking pain or stress relief throughout a long work-day or it may even be useful before (or after) hitting the gym for a smooth workout or a long-distance run. Kudos to the cultivators at Denver Relief for doing this strain justice.

When purchasing any cannabis product, I like to remind myself that there’s power in choosing which products to buy and, by proxy, which ideals you’d like to support. Occasionally, you’ll find a company whose passion for their product extends to all aspects of their business, and Jetty Extracts is a perfect example of such a company. Even if I ended up disliking their product, I would feel good about giving them my money (more on that later).
But I am indeed a fan now that I know Jetty delivered on every one of their claims. My half-gram cartridge of cannabis concentrate came in packaging made from recycled materials and was clearly labeled with the strain name — Silver Haze. The cartridge was filled with a cool-toned brown concentrate that was liquid in texture but not runny. At $40 for a half gram of cannabis oil, this cartridge is on par with other premium cartridges.
Out of all the many cannabis strains on the market, Silver Haze is one of my personal favorites. To me, it has a complex, pungent campfire aroma of wood and sweet smoke. Silver Haze was bred from the original landrace Haze strain, and is categorized as a sativa. Being crossed with Northern Lights, a popular indica strain, makes Silver Haze a go-to for those seeking relief from pain and depression. If you’ve found sativas to be too overwhelming or racy in the past, but still want a strain that offers the uplifting, energizing effects typical of a sativa, Silver Haze may be a good choice. For those seeking immediate relief, this is a fast-acting strain.
I tested this cartridge while getting ready for the holidays, so I had a multitude of items on my to-do list that required both physical and mental tasks, which didn’t leave a lot of time for medicating. Silver Haze works quickly, and Jetty made a cartridge with little to no drag, allowing me to medicate and get on with it. The first draw right out of the package can be a bit harsh, but this was perfectly smooth. After the first puff, I realized that this was a cartridge I’d like to spend time tasting and experiencing. Within a few minutes I started to feel the cerebral relaxation, and suddenly my to-do list didn’t seem so long. I did all of my online Christmas shopping and decorated my house without the anxiety I often feel during the holidays.
Now it was time to kick back and relax, and this Jetty Extracts cartridge was a great product for that. Short pulls, long pulls and frequent hits all tasted just as great as the first, with no burnt flavors or harsh hits. Since I was able to medicate more, I experienced a stronger body high, complete with floaty, weightless tingling in my arms and legs. The psychoactive effects were comfortable, allowing creative thoughts and a decent attention span while still being grounded in reality.
Buying cannabis oil cartridges in LA is still a journey. Most dispensaries only carry a few different brands of cartridges (if any), and only a couple of strains of each. This cartridge is definitely worth the search. In addition to buying a great product, I’m supporting a company that gives back to the community and continues to focus on research and development. Jetty donates one percent of their gross sales to cancer patients, including consultations for treatment plans and guidance in cultivating at home. Jetty also provides easy access to the independent test results of their products, which is a level of transparency that sets them apart from the competition.
Even without all of the good-will qualities, Jetty makes a top-notch product at a reasonable price, and I will be purchasing again.
