University of Denver Offers Cannabis Journalism Class

Changes to laws of any kind have further reaching effects than one might suspect, and the legalization of marijuana is no exception.

While media focus is often on the legal and criminal aspects of the decision, there are more things to consider — something that a new class at the University of Denver is poised to take a look at.

As an educational institution in a state that has legalized marijuana for both recreational and medical use, the University of Denver in Colorado is in the perfect place at the perfect time to offer a course on the emerging industry of Cannabis Journalism, just as the school is already offering Cannabis Law courses.

Andrew Matranga will be teaching the new course called Cannabis Journalism: Covering and Reporting on America’s New Normal, and as Andrew pointed out to The Cannabist:

“It might require some comfort zone-busting for the students, but that’s what journalism is great for, too.”

With this class, journalism students will get to investigate a topical issue that can change day by day. The course will be intensive, earning 4 credits in just 5 days, and gives enrollees the opportunity to immerse themselves in the life of a journalist.

Throughout the week, they will be looking at all the areas that can be impacted by this historic decision. The students will also interview professionals working in the industry, visit dispensaries and speak to everyday people. At the end, all of this research will be used to create a narrative work that documents the greater effects this decision has had and will continue to have on politics, law, finances and culture at both a societal and individual level.

According to the course description: “The magnitude of the change in America’s relationship to marijuana can’t be measured in only economic or social terms: There are deeper shifts going on here – cultural realignments, social adjustments, and financial adjustments.”

For University of Denver students, this presents a very real opportunity to get involved with a dynamic and controversial subject as it is unfolding and guaranteed to grow.
