Unlike in the United States, Russia enforces strict rules regarding Internet content, and censorship is commonly practiced. The Russian government reserves the right to remove any content deemed “inappropriate,” at any time.
Earlier this month Reddit was blocked in Russia because of a page offering advice for the use of psychedelic mushrooms. Now, officials have followed through with a threat to entirely block Wikipedia because of one cannabis page about charas, a handmade hash found most commonly in Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Nepal and Jamaica.
The Russian Internet is set up in such a way that individual pages cannot be blocked, so censoring just this page is not possible.
In an attempt to prevent the entire site from being blocked by Roskomnadzor, the Kremlin’s media supervisory agency, Wikipedia changed the url to the charas page. This move was unsatisfactory, however, and Wikipedia has officially been blocked in Russia.
