There’s nothing like a fresh, aromatic bud. Terpenes are the chemical compounds that give cannabis (and other plants) its distinct flavors and odors. But when cannabis loses all of its moisture, the pungent terpene oils also evaporate and become virtually non-existent.
Not only do terpenes make cannabis taste and smells the way it does, but they are also responsible for modulating the high that is associated with the inhalation of cannabinoids. Besides the loss of terpenes, bone dry cannabis becomes brittle and harder to work with when packing a bowl or rolling a joint. The burning quality of slightly hydrated herb is better than that of dehydrated cannabis, because it burns slower and cleaner. Plus, no one wants to break up material that turns to dust once it gets handled because it’s hard to work with and is even worse to smoke.
So how can you keep your whole flower cannabis fresh and hydrated in storage?
Integra packs are one of the many ways to maintain a healthy moisture level for cannabis. By sticking them in the same jar, these tiny packets release or absorb moisture depending on the ambient moisture or humidity.
For those with larger stashes, there is a size that accommodates an increase in the number of buds being maintained. Our product will not harden like a wafer when used up. Our product comes with a replacement indicator card to let you know when it’s time to replace.
The RAW Hydrostone is made from uncoated natural terracotta clay that gets baked in a kiln. This design was originally developed to keep tobacco fresh while being transported on ships.
In order to use the simple moisturizing stone, allow it to soak in water for five minutes. Next, place it in a bag or jar with your cannabis. It keeps the material fresh for a very long time, and will even bring older cannabis back to life. Like the Boveda packs, the Hydrostone is reusable as well.
Using a sealed jar plays an important role in preventing the loss of too much moisture when it comes to dry herb. And they’re cheap and easy to find!
Mason jars or pill bottles are acceptable to use, but there are many stash jars available for purchase both online and in head shops across the world. Anything that is clean and has a tight seal will help to preserve humidity. MassRoots recently teamed up with the Medtainer to bring a customized Medtainer to our shop! It’s airtight, watertight, and smell-proof. Check it out here.
Seek Out Properly Cured Buds
It’s important to remember that buds that are improperly cured are not going to vaporize or burn well at all. If there are recreational or medical outlets around, don’t settle for something that doesn’t seem like it’s either too moist or not moist enough. The loss of terpenes from poor curing can result in a dull taste that degrades the flavor and overall experience of smoking cannabis.
Keep Your Herb in a Dark and Cool Space
Cannabis that’s exposed to sunlight can affect the flavor of the bud. So, once you have your cannabis stashed away in a jar or airtight bag, remember to prevent terpenes from vaporizing by keeping it in a dark and cool space. While it doesn’t have to be stuck in a refrigerator, warm conditions aren’t ideal for storing herbs, so plan accordingly. Storing it in a cupboard or drawer should do the trick in most climates.
