Three Alabama mothers of children with severe forms of epilepsy have pressed the state to pass legislation that would legalize the use of single-cannabinoid medicinal cannabis oil. Rep. Mike Ball (R-Huntsville) agreed to sponsor the bill, called Leni’s Law, in the state house after seeing what great improvements a girl named Leni experienced with the use of CBD oil in Oregon.

The three mothers –Kari Forsyth, Jodi Mitchell, and Jessica Swanson– all appealed to the Madison County legislative delegation at the body’s yearly public gathering for cannabidiol (CBD) oil, a cannabis concentrate, to be legalized by Leni’s Law.

“Parents need to be able to not worry about whether they are going to jail to try to save our children,”

stated Mitchell during the meeting.

Alabama prohibits the possession of cannabis, including single cannabinoid medicines like CBD oil, unless done so in compliance with Carly’s Law. The limited access to the product –and the legal recourse that would accompany breaking the law– was met with consternation by the mothers.

Under Carly’s Law, only those patients participating in a study being conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) are legally permitted to use or posses CBD oil. Forshyth’s daughter was excluded from the study and therefore Carly’s Law, and Mitchell’s son was enrolled but not permitted to continue. Swanson’s daughter, Isla, is currently enrolled in the study and has seen significant improvement since using the CBD oil. The three mothers are speaking up to raise awareness.

“If I was to give her the oil now, I would be considered a criminal,”

Forsyth stated, referring to her daughter Chesney. “I’m not a criminal. I might speed occasionally but I’m not a criminal.

Like Rep. Ball, Forsyth has seen the significant improvements that children like Leni and Isla have experienced with the incorporation of cannabis oil.

“Leni and many other kids and people are your proof it works. Please stand with us parents and help us giving the kids of Alabama their best quality of life.”

Forsyth pleaded to the delegation and other Alabama constituents.
