Albanian government authorities have reported they confiscated nearly 500,000 cannabis plants this year, arresting approximately 240 cannabis traffickers and suspected growers.
Ardi Bita, the Interior Ministry spokesman stated that fighting drug production is a “top priority” for the police. He went on to say, nearly $7.9 billion USD worth of cannabis has been seized and destroyed thus far.
The latest large bust happened last Wednesday when 100 some police destroyed nearly 16,000 plants south of Tirana in Kurvelesh.
Albania has long been known as one of the largest illegal cannabis producing country’s in Europe. The extreme crackdown on cannabis started last year in Lazarat village where police in armored vehicles came under automatic weapon and rocket fire by local cannabis growers.
It does not look like this senseless fight will stop anytime soon, with Prime Minister Edi Rama promising to continue on his campaign promise of making the fight against ‘drugs’ his top priority.
