The rhetoric that gun-nuts and firearm enthusiasts like to hide behind when an affront to their sensibilities presents itself in the form of a bearded hippie or a tattooed picketer suggesting that gun control is not aimed at taking their rights away but rather keeping firearms from folks who shouldn’t have them is questionable at best. Far be it from me to propose that the same bleeding hearts who defend the second amendment with Trumpian logic and alternative facts wouldn’t hesitate to clap back on a school, mall, church or movie shooter; but eventually they’ve got to put their money where their mouth is.
Firearms are a powerful institution. They offer deterrent and destruction. The US Constitution protects “the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation” yet the confidences that this land was built on do not extend to those citizens who consume cannabis. Lobbying arms that swing liberally and play the power elite in Washington, D.C. like marionettes are abundant in their assertions that more people should have access to deadly weapons but hold no issue that federal cannabis prohibition prevents many able bodied and minded American citizens from experiencing the same constitutional entitlements as the mentally ill.
“Guns don’t kill people. I kill people. (Happy Gilmore)
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Firearm Transaction Record explicitly asks,
“Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?”
Then follows up with a bolded annotation stating,
“Warning: The use or possession of marijuana remains unlawful under Federal law regardless of whether it has been legalized or decriminalized for medicinal or recreational purposes in the state where you reside.”
It should come as no surprise that the same government that promotes such an archaic viewpoint while denying marijuana’s medicinal value would hold the patent advocating cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. Given that federally approved depressants, stimulants, narcotic drugs and other controlled substances cause tens of thousands of deaths per year it seems rather petty for them to be peddling such bullshit after all these years. This oversight isn’t like McDonald’s charging less for a McDouble than a double hamburger despite the former having cheese which costs money; it systematically suppresses an entire population’s second amendment rights.
A constraint of this nature is in direct opposition with the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It poses a significant problem for medical marijuana patients who have signed up through their state’s’ registry and are unable to simply lie about what they put into their bodies. Booze bags, coffee guzzlers, pill poppers, dope fiends and meth heads can just check the “No” box and be done with it. Patients who perjure themselves in order to obtain a firearm do so with a direct link back to their falsehood should Uncle Sam become a little too interested in their extracurricular activities.
Conservative lawmakers, policy advisors, their WASPy cronies and the rest of the deplorable who still rail against progressive positions need to pull their heads out of the sand on their private beaches. If our current administration must continue to gaslight the nation into believing that our ideals, principles and borders are under constant threat from radicals, I want a gun. Now! No if, ands or buts about it.
Eligibility to own a firearm should not be contingent on what we put into our bodies. Under this fallacy, anybody taking FDA approved drugs whose side effects include suicidal or homicidal ideation should not be exempt from having their rights stripped for the greater good. And if you’ve never seen a drunken asshole pull out a legally purchased gun and threaten to kill somebody standing next to you at the bar then consider yourself lucky while evaluating alcohol’s negative impact on public health and safety.
I’m never clearer than with a head full of THC. I unequivocally state that I would use lethal force to take out any foreign or domestic terrorist looking to harm those around me and that I’d probably be high while carrying out this act of patriotism. Sadly I’m unable to protect myself from the violent regime that has attacked Bowling Green and Sweden in recent weeks.
The choice between a smoking gun and smoking a joint isn’t a choice at all. All day, everyday—roll that shit, light that shit, smoke it.
