The political scene this go around has been interesting, to say the least. While the Democrat’s debates have primarily consisted of discussions about topics that Americans really care about, the GOP as spent their air time bashing each other’s reputations and discussing the size of Donald Trump’s various extremities.
It’s too soon to tell whether the next POTUS will be one who will continue to push our country in the right direction or be responsible for our ultimate downfall. Regardless of who our next President is, Americans, and indeed people all over the world, are anxious to see what he, or she, will do when it comes to marijuana legalization.
It’s a topic that most of the remaining candidates have spoken on. Ted Cruz has said that he doesn’t “agree” with the legalization of cannabis, but has acknowledged state’s rights to create and enforce their own legislation. Hillary has touched on the subject by tentatively supporting the legalization of medical marijuana pending “more research” into its reaction with other drugs.
One thing is for sure though, no candidate has been more open or more willing to discuss the federal future of marijuana legalization than Bernie Sanders; and he has the has the record to prove it. Not only has Bernie long been a supporter of the State’s Rights to Medical Marijuana Act, he’s been vehemently in favor of ending the disaster that is America’s War on Drugs.
While Bernie may not be a regular consumer himself, he is in favor of both legalization and decriminalization from the standpoint of its potential to lower the growing prison population and reduce the number of young people of color who face unnecessarily harsh penalties because of cannabis.
While his stance on marijuana isn’t a reason to vote for him in and of itself, it’s one that has earned him a great reputation with those of us who enjoy lighting up. In fact, some proponents of cannabis legalization #FeelTheBern so much, that they have begun a campaign urging cannabis enthusiasts to show their support with a special 4/20 donation.
The Facebook community “Cannabis Reformers for Bernie” have created an event titled “Donate $4.20 to Bernie Sanders on 4/20” that is quickly gaining traction. The page encourages Sanders supporters and cannabis lovers alike to donate $4.20, $42, or $420 to Bernie’s Campaign this April 20th as a means of showing their support for the bud and a man who may just make its legalization a reality for America.
According to page organizers, it’s a great way to, “send a message to the establishment that alone we’re harmless bees but together we’re a ferocious swarm that will not be silenced!” Not to mention the fact that if each of the over 1 million individuals who have contributed to Bernie’s campaign so far were to give the lowest suggested donation of $4.20, he’d raise another $4.2 million in just one day.
If you’re interested in taking part in this 4/20 themed political revolution, you can make your donation directly through the Bernie Sanders campaign website. We can do this folks. If you #BernGreenGiveGreen and remember to #BernOneForBernie tomorrow in addition to donating!
