Here at MassRoots, we have a unique opportunity to connect with figures that have been in the cannabis scene way before legalization. The OG’s of the game. One of those figures that we recently were lucky enough to interview was Steve Loch, the founder and CEO of Celebration Pipes.
Celebration Pipes are LAVASTONEWARE pipes handcrafted by Steve and his family and plated in either 22kt Gold, Platinum, Opal, Black Coral, Purple Haze, or exotic Hanalei Blue finishes. Needless to say, these pipes are worth celebrating.
We were able to sit down with Steve and ask him some questions about his pipes and it turns out Steve has some great stories to tell about the origins of the pipes and the celebrities who have gotten their hands on them.
How did you think of the idea to make lava pipes?
It was Christmas time in Hawaii (1973) and we had been so busy that we had not had time to shop. At the time we (The Lach family) had been making gold plated custom mugs for KPOI radio and all my neighbors had been turning us on to always free pakalolo (term for marijuana in Hawaii) so I figured I’d make some gold plated pipes…and the rest is history…
How do you create them?
We make each piece by hand…no molds whatsoever. There are about 29 separate steps to make a pipe start to finish and up to 5 firings to over 2200 degrees F.
Is it just you?
Just me, my wife and daughter…It’s a family affair.
Do you personally find the material?
I created the ceramic composite that makes up the body of the pipe and use Hawaiian river rocks to shape and texture the stems.
Why are lava pipes so awesome?
The gold plating in each bowl reflects the heat of the burning contents and stays lit so you don’t need to constantly relight the bowl with butane or sulfur…yeeeech.
I like to layer the bowl with buds, kief, a little oil or wax and then a little more ground bud on top. Fire when ready and voila!
Oh yeah, the Lavastoneware is as strong as a rock. The pipes are generational heirlooms…virtually indestructible.
Have any celebrities ever tried the lava pipe?
I helped everyone on our celeb list to party with the pipes when they were presented in backstage green rooms before or after the concert. The promoters and agents commission the pieces as exclusive “Goody Bags” for a long time, over 43 years now. Our first major presentation was to AEROSMITH in 1977 at NBC arena in Honolulu…Platinum Pipes for the Platinum punks…Dream on. I even remember we partied before and after in the green room with bowls of Nepalese finger hash and Maui Wowie…sorta fun.
I was very honored to present and smoke with Bob and the Wailers after the show in the Lahaina tennis stadium in August 1978. They played for almost 3 hours as the sun went down and the full moon rose over the west Maui mountains. From Jamaica to Maui all love one love rastafari. About 3 years ago I had the honor to again meet Ziggy in Los Angeles and now 2 generations of Marley share the vessels.
Other celebrities on the list include Hugh Hefner, Cheech and Chong, and many more.
In what ways do lava pipes represent or reflect Hawaiian culture?
They are the ultimate expression of Aloha as the sacrament of pakalolo is consumed in a golden vessel.
