In a regular scheduled meeting held late last week the Colorado Medical Marijuana Scientific Advisory Council, chose eight research grant proposals for the Board of Health to consider for approval at its Dec. 17 meeting. Proposed studies are wide ranging and focused on targeting specific diseases and groups of people.

“Colorado is leading the way in devoting significant resources to study medical marijuana,” said Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. “We hope the studies will contribute to the scientific research available about the use of marijuana in effectively treating various medical conditions.”

In 2013 during the formation of Amendment 64, the Colorado General Assembly (SB14-155) formed an advisory council and appropriated $10 million from the medical marijuana cash fund to be used for “objective scientific research regarding the efficacy of marijuana and its component parts as part of medical treatment.” It’s important to note $1 million of the total $10 million is to be used for costs to administer the program.

The advisory council reviewed a total of 57 proposals, 10 of which didn’t meet initial requirements. Of the 47 remaining proposals, the eight list below have made the ‘final cut.’ Each of the proposals is a 2-3 year study. In the event there is unallocated funding, the board may dictate the department and advisory council regarding the funding of additional research proposals.
