I knew that Gorilla Glue #4 was a hybrid, but based solely on the name, I assumed that it was going to be a stoney, indica dominant strain, poised to stick me to the couch. But well, as we all know, assumptions can be wrong.

This 2014 Cannabis Cup award recipient, said to have been bred accidentally, personifies the saying, “whats in a name?”.

These particular buds, procured from Good Chemistry in Aurora, CO, were top-notch. Good Chemistry’s Gorilla Glue #4 was dense, well trimmed, and covered tip to stem with orange hairs and glittery trichomes. It was well cured, too. Dry enough that I could easily crush a nug into a bowl with no fuss, but not so dry that it crumbled in my fingers. Once the bowl was packed, I fired up my hemp wick for the ultimate flavor experience and went in for a rip.

Tickling the flame over the bowl, I inhaled slowly. As the bong began to fill up with thick, white, milky smoke, my heart rate began to flutter in anticipation. Once the bong was opaque with smoke, I pulled the slide, and was instantly greeted with a mouthful of sour, earth, cheese, and pine. On the exhale, I was left with just an earthy pine taste. These flavors led me to believe there to be some strong concentrations of terpenes, especially earthy and sedating myrcene and pinene, which is piney and improves alertness. It was a little harsh on the way out, but I had taken a generous rip.

In just about five minutes, I realized why they called it Gorilla Glue — my eyelids felt like they were stuck shut and I was moving ever so slowly. My mobility felt very deliberate and heavy, as if I had just smoked a stoney indica strain, but surprisingly, I lacked the drowsiness and lethargy.

The heaviness I was feeling dissipated after about 25 minutes, and my thoughts began to lift into the definitely un-glue-like characteristics of a sativa high. Once again, I was able to blink, and a light pressure formed behind my eyes — similar effects displayed by the aptly named Headband strains (707 Headband, Blueberry Headband, 818 Headband, etc). One notable difference, however, is the Gorilla Glue placed pressure on my whole head, as opposed to just a band around my eyes.

I didn’t have any pressing responsibilities, which as it turns out, was certainly a good thing for me. Before my initial smoke, I was sitting at my computer casually watching music videos. Then I took a hit, and suddenly I was downstairs doing something totally different clueless as to the transgression of events. I did notice, however, that the stiffness in my joints was dulled.

Gorilla Glue #4 is definitely well-balanced, wavering between head and body, while never pushing the bounds too far in either spectrum. I decided to take another hit, albeit a more reasonably sized one; this one came out smooth, and I was on to the next thing free of joint pain.

When planning to consume Gorilla Glue #4, a free schedule would be ideal because it may not be the best facilitator for marking tasks off the to-do list. Unless of course your to-do list consists of playing video games, listening to music, relaxing or wandering without any overly sedative indica effects or too much of the cerebrally stimulating sativa, then Gorilla Glue #4 may be perfect. And remember, that which we call Gorilla Glue #4, by any other name would smell just as pungent.
