On Tuesday, Illinois officials announced that children in need of medical marijuana will soon have access. Under the new rules, children under the age of 18 will have access to several types of medical marijuana. The proposed rules will limit medical marijuana consumption to edibles, tinctures, and other non-smokable forms of marijuana.

When Illinois passed their recent medical marijuana legislation, they left out one of the most important types of patient; children. The glaring oversight by the state provoked the attention of parents with children suffering from chronic and debilitating conditions. These parents worked fiercely to make sure that children in need of medical marijuana would be eligible for medical marijuana. The new legislation takes effect on January 1st and will cover over 30 different qualifying conditions for kids.

Each child will be required to submit photos in order to be approved for medical marijuana use, but will be able to omit the fingerprints required by qualifying adults. Enrollment for Illinois’ medical marijuana program started back in September and several hundred individuals have already been approved. Before the end of the year, 21 grow operations and around 60 dispensaries will be awarded licenses for operation in 2015.
