The largest marijuana bust in Otay Mesa border patrol history occurred recently when authorities seized 31,598 pounds of the plant before it crossed into California.
The 15 tons were separated into 1,296 packages (photo above and below) which were stashed inside a truck that was supposedly hauling mattresses across the border into California. This is the second largest border control bust in the nation’s history.
The inspecting officer asked the truck to pull into the x-ray exam area, where authorities quickly realized that the truck cargo was filled with much more than just mattresses and cushions.
The truck was pulled aside for thorough examination and inspection. One California border patrol officer opened the trailer door (photo below) to find 15 tons of marijuana with an estimated street value of over $18 million. All packages were contained with plastic wrap, and stacked floor to ceiling from front to back.
It turned out that there were very few mattresses in the truck at all.
The largest scale marijuana bust in history at the United States border with Mexico was in 2013 when border patrol officers at the Calexico East port of entry discovered 35,265 pounds.
This seizure of 31,598 pounds is the second largest in national history, and the largest in Otay Mesa. Until now, the record in Otay Mesa was in 2003 when 19,999 pounds were discovered before successfully entering the United States.
