Whoopi Goldberg’s new medical marijuana company geared towards women and their menstrual cycles just had an unintended political consequence in New Jersey. Last Friday, the West Orange, NJ native’s home state proposed adding “painful menstrual cramps” to the state’s list of qualifying medical marijuana conditions.

Like nausea, medical cannabis effectively treats stomach cramps and would be a viable option to treat New Jersey women’s cases of dysmenorrhea. The bill, proposed by four Democrats, is the first specific effort of its kind in any medical marijuana state (note: to best of my knowledge) that would allow doctors to prescribe medical cannabis for dysmenorrhea.

While medical patients in states like California and Colorado can certainly qualify for medical cannabis with severe stomach cramps, it’s unusual to see such a niche condition targeted by state legislators. New Jersey has had medical marijuana in place since 2010, but access remains limited to those with severe ailments like terminal cancer and other severe illnesses.

This decision to propose such a niche condition clearly targets New Jersey and Governor Christie’s overly restrictive policy–and also aims to generate a bigger profit for the state. Assemblyman Tim Eustace added these poignant words regarding the bill:

“New Jersey is missing out on millions of dollars in tax revenue due to the restrictive nature of its medical marijuana law. While this will affect women directly, the financial benefit ultimately will be positive for everyone in the state.”

Likewise, the decision was also clearly influenced by Whoopi Goldberg’s recent launch.

Whoopi & Maya plans to offer products ranging from an edible to a tincture targeting women and their menstrual issues. Perhaps their products will migrate from California to New Jersey if and when this bill becomes law.
