Yesterday, Senator Joshua Miller submitted legislation that would legalize recreational marijuana in Rhode Island.

The Marijuana Regulation, Control, and Taxation Act would legalize recreational consumption of cannabis and create a retail environment similar to that of Colorado’s.

“It’s time to regulate and tax marijuana in Rhode Island and treat it similarly to how we treat alcohol.”

Stated Sen. Joshua Miller in an email to GoLocalProve.

He continued,

“Marijuana prohibition is an ineffective and wasteful policy, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer. The legislature is perfectly capable of creating a system that will work for Rhode Island.”

Rhode Island legalized medical marijuana in 2006 and possession of small amounts of cannabis is already decriminalized.

Similar bills have been introduced by legislators (instead ballot initiatives) in Texas, Georgia, Florida, and most notably in Vermont where there is a strong sentiment it will easily pass.
