I peered through a glass display case protecting cannabis at Denver’s Pure Marijuana Dispensary on Bannock Street; Stevie Wonder peered back at me as I asked myself, “how do strains get their names?”

Moments before, I was waiting in Pure’s oddly soothing, Easter-colored waiting room enjoying some semi-obscure hip hop. At that time, my only concern was “I want the good stuff.” The always-friendly receptionist with a necktie collection that would make Craig Sager blush—this time sporting a red, patterned number—called me into the sales area. Once I began inspecting the cannabis on display, my focus quickly shifted to Stevie Wonder—an affordable sativa cannabis strain.

Bodhi Seeds breeds a Stevie Wonder strain that is crossed from Sensi Star, Trainwreck, Blueberry, and Bubba Kush. Could this Stevie Wonder be the same strain? I asked Pure’s very helpful staff about their Stevie Wonder’s genetics. As it turns out, Pure’s grower has kept their Stevie Wonder’s parent genetics a proprietary secret; in fact, it is the only strain shrouded in such secrecy. Nothing grabs my attention more than forbidden fruit, so I purchased an eighth for my personal investigation. After repeated “taste testing,” my guess is Pure’s Stevie Wonder is a cross between Durban Poison and Blue Dream and, thus, is different from the Bodhi Seeds strain; but that is only a guess.

Pure’s Stevie Wonder is a fairly dense, well-cured, and hand-trimmed flower. The flower is moss green with the occasional dark green patch, lightly speckled with orange (attributable to the flower’s numerous but small pistils), and has a steady covering of trichomes. Upon first whiff, Pure’s Stevie Wonder has strong pine, pepper, and sweet notes with an undertone of lavender. After breaking up the flower, however, a tide of sweet berry fragrance dominates the flower’s aroma. Not surprisingly, Stevie Wonder’s flavor is sweet overall with berry notes.

While Stevie Wonder’s physical attributes are certainly pleasant, the strain’s effects really impressed me. I lean towards heady, active sativas; boy, did Stevie deliver. After just one joint, a wave of energy, mental stimulation, and joy washed over me. I felt like doing Stevie Wonder’s patented head bob. I was so mentally stimulated, in fact, that I engaged my friend in a terribly interesting conversation about the modern state of country music; I hate country music. And Stevie did not stop there. In addition to its mental effects, I still somehow felt relaxation in my face and body that was accompanied by a massaging sensation around my brain—as if Stevie himself was tickling my brain with his ever-dexterous fingers the way he tickles the ivories.

In my opinion, Pure Marijuana Dispensary’s Stevie Wonder offers the best of both worlds: an energetic, mentally stimulating experience accompanied by satisfying body stimulation. I am not sure how most strains get their name, but I think I can venture a guess about Pure’s Stevie Wonder. I would absolutely recommend Stevie Wonder to anyone who enjoys a heady sativa or energizing and uplifting effects.
